Have not had time to update the blog, was out of town Monday and Tuesday..then came home Wednesday to a package I had been waiting for, for awhile….my Accuquilt Go Fabric Cutter. I have wanted one forever but just had a hard time buying one since I kept telling myself I have two good hands that can cut for free! Well… I opened my package I have been playing with it ever since. It is amazing, I cut out over 200 5 1/2′ squares in a little under an hour! One of the things I probably dislike most about quilting is cutting out my quilt…it seems so tedious and I am sure to make at least one cutting mistake and waste fabric. I as usual bought mine on Ebay for about $260.00..which is a steal being they retail for $350.00. It came with three die cutters. I will add the product info below, but I love this machine…I can see many possibilities with many projects plus maybe making some money selling precut squares and such…..I definitely give this machine two thimbles up, this is the best toy for any quilter!!!

Quilt Teacher’s Ten Commandments

Thought I would add this post…it is so fun

1. Thou shalt not ridicule a student’s choice of fabrics nor their colors; a student’s taste should be reflected in their work

2. Thou shalt not require excessive expenditures for a class; thou dost not know a student’s financial situation.

3. Thou shalt provide students with clearly written and illustrated handouts. Thou shalt be able to explain a
construction step with more than one method.(written, verbal, visual)

4. Thou shalt provide value for their money; at least one other variation of the quilt in addition to the standard.

5. Thou shalt be on time, start on time and provide time for questions.

6. Thou shalt circulate amongst the students, checking progress,even if thy feet dost hurt.

7. Thou shalt find something positive to say about each student’s work. Thou shalt not have a “My way or no way” frame of mind; creativity comes in many forms.

8. When a student makes a good suggestion, thou will announce it to the class and give credit where due.

9. Thou shalt allow some time after class to help anyone who sews at a more leisurely pace.

10. Thou shalt show numerous samples; and if thou dost not have numerous samples done, make suggestions for other applications of the pattern.

If you love making yo yo’s this is a must quilting gadget to get. I love it and am addicted to making these. With the yo yo maker I can now make a little over 30 yo yo’s an hour while watching TV or sitting outside. What I love most is now all of my yo yo’s actually come out the same size for the first time ever! Even if you are a novice this is such an easy tool to use!

I have all of the yo yo templates and the jumbo size yo yo maker is probaby my favorite one as I am hoping to eventually do a complete king size quilt. and the larger yoyos will help me accomplish that quicker. Amy Butler Birdie Sling Tote Bag Midwest Modern Sewing Pattern

Well it is a cloudy Sunday here on the Outer Banks and with most of my work caught up on I decided to try the Amy Butler birdie Sling Tote. I have had the pattern sitting around for awhile and it took me seeing someone carrying a finished one at the grocery store to give me the push I needed. First of all this bag is huge! I love huge bags, finished product is 28″ tall by 18″ high. This size tote is perfect for me with having three kids in tow I usually need to carry all the stuff they bring with them and decide they do not want to carry anymore
For me the pattern was fairly easy. I loved it- fast and quick! I had the entire tote finished in 3 hours. If you like showing off large scale prints and if you like big totes then I highly recommend getting this pattern It is fun, easy, trendy, and if you do craft shows I am sure it will get you a couple of orders! The one recommendation I have for this pattern is to plan on adding a button closure if you are picky about having the tote bag close at the top.

Best Sewing or Quilting Machine for the Money- Brother CS6000I

A good quilting friend of mine wanted to buy a so called “cheap machine” to tote around on her quilting retreats and to quilt classes and ordered this one. When she told me it cost $180.00 with free shipping I could not believe it!

I just came from her house and have to say this machine is anything but cheap! It has over 60 stitches and the machine is computerized-which is definitely a must have for me! It is wonderful machine. Wish I had some extra money this month to pick one up. I give this machine a thumbs up!

How to Open a Quilt Shop

I have had a few people email and ask me how I opened my quilt shop and where do I start, what is it like…ect? I personally used Chuck Smiths guide to open our shop and highly recomend it. Chuck Smiths guide to opening a quilt shop it is the best money you can spend in learning how to operate a quilting business. I still refrence it to this day!

What is it like?

Well, plan on putting many hours in. When my husband and I first started we were easily putting in over 12 hour days for the first 6 months. Not an easy task when you have small children!

Should I do Internet?

Most definately, internet became over 60 percent of our sales. It is very time consuming at first but once you get the hang of it, it is well worth it!

Is now a good time to open a shop?

Well let me say that the recession has hurt our sales by about 15% and I am sure other shops are suffering too- but all in all fabric is a strong business!

Charm Packs, What are they?

Charm Packs are great pre-cut 5″ squares that usually come in packs by collection. They are just so fun and so many different things can be done with them. You really can have a fast quilt top in a day. Although I recommend buying more then 1 pack. I usually get at least three of them and that will get a pretty decent size quilt with adding borders. Possibly the best thing about charm packs are they are cut so precisely that you rarely have to worry about your seams matching up.
